78 Years of Inspiring Dancers

Lisa Pelio, director of Pelio School of Dance,

has built a noteworthy career as a master ballet teacher and choreographer, upon the firm foundation instilled by her first teacher and Mother, regional ballet pioneer, Lena Pelio.  As a young dancer she was a principal and soloist performer with Flint Ballet Theater and Dance Detroit's "Nutcracker Ballet" with the Detroit Symphony and was a featured dancer with the Atlanta Opera.

After earning her Grade VII Advanced Teacher Certificate in the Cecchetti Method, she was elected at just 23 years old to be the first “Young Teacher of the Year” nationally, by the Cecchetti Council of America.  She went on to work for schools in Atlanta and Chicago such as School of Atlanta Ballet and Northside High School for the Performing Arts in Atlanta.

After returning to Michigan, Ms. Pelio was named Ballet Mistress for the Michigan Opera Theater production of “Cinderella”, served two terms on the Michigan Humanities Council, and was a Michigan representative for the National Conference in Washington DC.

She was also nominated for the prestigious “Athena Award”.  Ms. Pelio continues to provide the highest level of dance education while also mounting full-length ballets and staging lavish jazz and tap production numbers featuring her dancers.
